The history of Usuki ware
Usuki ware is a mysterious type of potteries that flourished for a decade or so before declining and dying out.
The production of Usuki ware began in the late years of the Edo period. Usuki ware, originally managed by the government of Han of the Usuki region, is named after the region of Usuki. However, Usuki ware is also sometimes referred to as suehrio ware and sarayamaki ware after the location of the original workshop. Four families of potters from Shimabara (Nagasaki), Koishiwara (Fukuoka), and Komine were summoned to Usuki to create Usuki (in Miyazaki). However, Usuki ware was abandoned after only a dozen years. Due to the short period of time, there are only a few documents left about Usuki ware.
In 2015, after a lapse of about 200 years, Usuki ware was revived by local potters. Local workshops, such as the Sarayama Studio and the Usuki ware Research Institute(臼杵焼研究所), are working hard to revive Usuki ware based on the remaining materials to pass on the forgotten techniques of Usuki.
The Usuki Ware Institute is housed in a renovated old post office.

Usuki ware is created from the concept that “A dish is the frame for the food that is served on it.” Usuki ware is thus crafted with the goal of accentuating the natural beauty of the traditional culinary culture of Usuki. Ingredients harvested from the bountiful oceans and vast mountains, as as the many crops, miso and soy sauces, and local breweries of the Usuki area are depicted harmoniously in the design of Usuki ware.
